Eco Day at The Station

Celebrate community action tackling climate change and protecting nature, as The Station hosts a community focussed Eco Day on Saturday 15th June – part of The Great Big Green Week.

We will be joined by a number of local environmental groups who will be here to share their work in helping to save the environment – come along and say hello to:

Richmondshire Landscape Trust  

The Richmondshire Landscape Trust is a registered charity formed in 2004 to take over the running of 88 acres of land to the south and west of the Richmond formerly owned by the Richmondshire District Council. Their aim has always been to preserve this land as public open space whilst increasing biodiversity and providing secure wildlife habitats; conservation is at the heart of everything they do.

Just The Job

Just the Job provide a unique service in Richmond providing meaningful work based activities for individuals requiring help and support to achieve their full potential in life. They have a 3-acre Community Orchard and Horticultural site, and are currently fundraising for “The Big Green Build” – a new site for the organisation with environmental considerations at all levels.

Save Our Swale

Save Our Swale is a community group of dedicated volunteers founded in June 2023 to respond to the wanton pollution of our rivers. Concern arose for the health of the Swale due to residents’ observations of the river, figures of sewage dumping from Yorkshire Water sewer overflow sites and the lack of an effective regulatory body. Through working together with other likeminded groups and campaigns, regular monitoring of river water quality and by raising awareness of the issue, Save Our Swale aims to end sewage pollution of the Swale to ensure the river is clean and healthy for wildlife and water based recreation.

Foxglove Covert

Foxglove Covert Local Nature Reserve is situated at the edge of Catterick Garrison. A network of way-marked footpaths connects a wonderful mosaic of habitats from woodland and wetlands to meadows and ponds. The site is managed by staff and a large team of volunteers, using sympathetic habitat management techniques such as scything, coppicing and hedgelaying. As well as hosting school visits, they run public events such as Birdwatching for Beginners, Wildlife Photography and pond dipping for families in the summer months. Foxglove Covert is home to a wealth of wildlife – so whether you’re interested in seeing early migrant birds in spring, orchids in summer, colourful trees in autumn or you fancy a frosty walk in winter, this is the place to visit.

Buglife

Buglife is the only organisation in Europe devoted to the conservation of all invertebrates. They’re actively working to save the rarest little animals, everything from bees to beetles, worms to woodlice and jumping spiders to jellyfish. Their aim is to halt the extinction of invertebrate species and to achieve sustainable populations of invertebrates. The Coast-to-Coast B-Lines project is working in the Richmond area with local communities and land owners to create and restore areas of flower-rich grassland and other habitats for invertebrates and people along the B-Lines and Coast to Coast National Trail.

Richmondshire Climate Action Partnership

Richmondshire Climate Action Partnership are taking action to respond to the climate and environment emergency affecting us all. They are a group of volunteers working with and inspiring local people and communities to take action to tackle climate change.

Alongside our eco partners on the Station Platform, we’ll also be showing a reel of short eco videos (approx. 10 minutes) in Screen 3 of The Station Cinema from 10am to 1pm. Suitable for all the family and available to pop in and out as you please (no booking required); the videos have been handpicked to evoke thoughts on your own environmental impact.

Visitors can also take part in Richmondshire Climate Action Partnership’s Wildlife Wander; with wildlife enthusiasts located along the former railway line to Easby, to help encourage, inspire and support you to spot the abundance of local wildlife.

In partnership with the Richmond Walking & Book Festival, there will also be a number of eco talks in Richmond over the same weekend.
