Can we maintain economic food production and biodiversity in a changing climate? Tue 4 Oct

We have a biodiversity crisis and a need for food resilience. Do we rewild the countryside or can agri-environment schemes deliver?

Dr John Redhead, from the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, explores the sustainable use of land for protecting nature and ensuring human benefits. This talk focuses on the results of a ten year monitoring programme of agri-environment schemes looking at the changes to biodiversity and the economics of implementation on a working lowland farms. This is one model to guide implementation of the new ELMS payments to farmers for local nature recovery and sustainable farming to improve the ecological connectivity of our farmland landscapes and enable species to adapt or move in response to climate change alongside food production.

Why we need a Green New Deal: talk followed by Q&A Wed 5 Oct

We often say our economic system is broken, and many are calling for a ‘Green New Deal’ as an alternative. But what does this mean? Why isn’t leaving the climate emergency to the free market going to work? Why is it wrong to say we can’t afford one? How should we look to distinguish a genuine Green New Deal from political greenwash? Is a Green New Deal a way to restore economic growth and the capitalist system, or should we aspire to a post-capitalist Degrowth Green New Deal? This online event, with guest speakers, will explore these issues and more.

To book on to this event, visit: Why We Need a Green New Deal Tickets, Wed 5 Oct 2022 at 19:00 | Eventbrite
